Die Harsh: A Christmas Musical Audition: Harry Wellis/Young Hans/Ensemble

Grindstone Theatre is holding auditions for the role of Harry Wellis/Young Hans/Ensemble for their 2026 production of Die Harsh: A Christmas Musical.

About Grindstone Theatre:


Grindstone Theatre is an indie/professional non-profit arts organization based in Edmonton Alberta whose work is rooted in improv and musical comedy. Past productions include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Rocky Horror Show, Die Harsh The Christmas Musical, Jason Kenney’s Hot Boy Summer, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Thunder(CATS), King of the Hill, Whose Rhyme Is It Anyway?, The 11 O’clock Number the award winning Improvised Musical, Urinetown The Musical, The Adventures of Chucky and Reggie, Here Lies Henry, The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged, HONK! The Ugly Duckling Musical, and Shakespeare’s Henry V.

About the Show:


Sexy German criminal Alan Rickman-I-mean-Hans-Shmuber leads an international gang of terrorists who seize an office tower during a Christmas party. John, a cop from New York, is trapped on the upper floors. He’ll need a Christmas miracle to save his power-suit dressing wife Holly and the other hostages. This Die-Hard-Christmas-Carol is about as stupid as it sounds with action packed comedy, tap dancing FBI agents and heartbreaking flashbacks of kids who are coughing too much. This Edmonton original musical satire is back.

 

Rehearsals: December 1, 2026 - December 16, 2026
Performance: December 17, 2026 - December 30
*this production includes a potential holdover to January 3, 2026

Audition Details


Date: Sept 10 5pm-9pm and Sept 13 4pm-7pm
Time: Those selected for an audition will be provided an audition time, but please let us know if you have a preference.
Location: Grindstone Theatre Studio. Zoom auditions or video submissions will also be
accepted.

Audition Requirements:
Performs will be provided songs and sides.

We are looking for a female or non binary identifying actor to play multiple roles
including:
● Harry Wellis: Head of International Development at Origami Corporation, Wellis is a Californian coked-out corporate opportunist with an eye for his co-worker Holly.
● Young Hans Schmuber: Little German orphan Hans who goes through some sh*t to become our main man.
● Puppeteer for Teddy Bear and Ghost of Christmas Past: puppeting a giant doped out Teddy Bear as well as the hauntingly rude Ghost of Christmas Past (both full bodied, harnessed puppets).
● …as well as a German Caroler, Sexy German Terrorist, Cockney Paradise California Police, and more!

About the Audition Process:


● Auditions will be conducted in a friendly and supportive atmosphere conducted by Sarah Dowling (Director) and Simon Abbott (Musical Director/Co-Writer)
● Live accompanist will be provided for provided songs
● You may be asked to stay for a brief interview following your audition
● If auditioning through Zoom or a video, feel free to use the audio tracks provided

Additional Information:


Actors who are Equity members will be put on an equity contract for the productions through the Equity DOT Agreement.
Rehearsals and performances will take place at the Orange Hub in Edmonton.

LEAD HOUSE TECHNICIAN - COMEDY THEATRE

Job Description:​

 

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Lead House Technician to join our team at The Grindstone Theatre. The Lead House Technician will be responsible for providing technical support for performances and events, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of audio, lighting, and other technical equipment, and maintaining the overall functionality and appearance of the performance space. The Lead House Technician is also responsible for scheduling techs, managing equipment and the space and is required to attend the weekly bistro meeting.

About the Role:

Grindstone Theatre is currently in a period of exciting transition, and we’re looking for a team player who will work closely with all the departments. The marketing manager is responsible for managing their team, working with department managers and promoting all Grindstone events.

SECURITY/DOOR PERSON - COMEDY THEATRE

Job Description:

We are seeking folks to work Security/Door for Grindstone Theatre’s late night events. These folks need to have their ProTect certification, and de-escalation training would be a benefit. The Security/Door Person will be required to check patron ID’s, scan tickets for late night events, support Box Office and ensure proper behaviour from our patrons.

About the Role:

This is a contract position, successful applicants will be required to provide an email address for e-transfer payments. Payments will be made the following Wednesday of each shift via e-transfer. Applicants understand that this position is considered as a “private contractor” and is not covered by Grindstone’s liability insurance or WCB.

BOX OFFICE AND FRONT OF HOUSE SUPERVISOR

Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled, organized, and customer-focused Box Office and Front of House Supervisor to join our team at The Grindstone Theatre. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role in overseeing front of house operations, ticket sales, patron services, staff training, and event readiness.

The Box Office and Front of House Supervisor will work closely with the FOH Services & Concession Manager to ensure that every performance and event provides a welcoming, efficient, and positive experience for patrons, staff, volunteers, and artists.
